Mercy Wanja’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of determination. Growing up in Kamirithu village, Limuru, she has faced numerous challenges, but her dream to break free from the cycle of poverty has remained strong. Mercy worked diligently at Manguo Primary School, walking long distances daily, and ultimately scored 345 marks in her KCPE exams. Despite her achievements, financial constraints and family hardships kept her from joining high school.
Mercy’s single mother, a casual laborer, struggles to provide for her children. Living hand-to-mouth, the family was given shelter by a well-wisher due to life’s overwhelming challenges. Though they live in difficult conditions, Mercy has always remained focused on her education, determined to rise above the obstacles.
In early 2023, Mercy’s plight caught the attention of Humanity Foundation Kenya. She had secured a spot at Mirithu Girls High School in Ndeiya, but due to her family's financial challenges, she couldn’t report on time. Mercy was supposed to join a school in Bomet County but could not manage the transition due to her mother’s financial struggles. For months, she stayed at home, watching her dreams of education fade.
In March 2023, through the kindness of humans of goodwill, Mercy’s situation took a turn for the better. Donations came in, both in goods and finances, to cover her school fees, uniform, pocket money, and transport. Two months late, she finally reported to Mirithu Girls, where she was welcomed with open arms by the school principal. The principal encouraged Mercy, reminding her that with focus, determination, and God’s grace, she could catch up and even surpass her peers.
Since joining Mirithu Girls High School, Mercy has made incredible progress. In her second term of Form Two in 2024, she emerged as the 4th best student out of 173 students and the best in her class. Her grades have steadily improved, and her commitment to her studies has been nothing short of inspiring. Mercy's story is a powerful reminder that with support, focus, and determination, any obstacle can be overcome.
While Mercy's progress has been remarkable, her journey is far from over. She needs continued support to complete her high school education and pursue her dreams beyond. Without the necessary resources, Mercy's future remains uncertain. We are calling on humans of goodwill to stand with Mercy, just as they did when she first joined school.
Your donations can make a real difference in keeping her in school, providing the essential items she needs to continue excelling—school fees, uniforms, books, transport, and more. Sponsorships can ensure Mercy completes her high school education and pursues higher learning opportunities, ultimately breaking the poverty cycle in her family.
This is more than just supporting one girl’s education—it’s an investment in the future of an entire family and community. Mercy’s success story can inspire others, and your contributions will directly impact her life, giving her the tools to achieve her dreams.
At Humanity Foundation Kenya, we believe in the power of education to change lives. Mercy Wanja is a perfect example of how a little support can go a long way in transforming someone's future. We are not tired of calling upon humans of goodwill to step forward and be part of this noble mission.
Every donation matters, and your sponsorship could be the key to ensuring Mercy’s education dream stays alive. Together, we can make sure she continues to excel and ultimately fulfill her goal of creating a better future for herself and her family.
