Kelvin Njenga’s journey is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the incredible transformation that can occur with community support. In 2021, Humanity Foundation Kenya took up Kelvin’s case under dire circumstances, aiming to give him a fresh start.

Surviving on the Streets: A Story of Determination

Hailing from Karanjee, opposite Limuru Mission Comprehensive School, Kelvin had been living with his elderly grandmother in extreme poverty. With no family support and his grandmother too frail to work, Kelvin took to the streets—not to steal, but to beg. His only goal was to secure enough food for both of them to survive. At a young age, he made the noble choice to beg rather than resort to crime, showing a strength of character well beyond his years.

Despite these hardships, Kelvin was a diligent student at Limuru Mission Comprehensive School. He surprised everyone by scoring 347 in the KCPE exams, earning the top boy position and ranking 4th overall. His success in the face of adversity revealed a young man of immense potential who simply needed a chance.

Humanity Foundation’s Response: A Life Rebuilt

Recognizing the urgent need to change Kelvin’s living conditions, Humanity Foundation mobilized resources and well-wishers. We built Kelvin’s grandmother a decent one-bedroom house, complete with an outdoor kitchen, a modern washroom, and a water tank to improve their sanitation. We also furnished the home and committed to providing them with regular food support, allowing Kelvin to focus entirely on his studies without the burden of street life.

A Path to Education and Empowerment

In addition to providing Kelvin with a stable home, Humanity Foundation raised funds to enroll him at Kiambu High School. Through the generosity of sponsors, his school fees have been covered for all four years, giving him the opportunity to focus on his education. Humanity Foundation has stayed involved, providing mentorship, attending school meetings, and ensuring Kelvin has everything he needs to thrive.

Now, as he prepares for his KCSE exams in 2024, Kelvin dreams of attending college and building a life of independence and purpose.
